Ember
by TROELS FLENSTED
Ember is a sculptural side table treated with the Japanese wood-burning technique Shou Sugi Ban, to create a unique texture and a deep black colour. Made from Dinesen offcuts, which would have been sold as firewood. It was originally designed for the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in 2016 under the theme ‘Pitch Black’, suggesting exhibitors work with black as a colour.
“I wanted to use light to create dark. A table which looked like it had just been pulled from the fire” – Troels Flensted.
The charred wood rests on a black metal frame, lifting it from the ground to make it possible to appreciate how the different grain structures have reacted to the flames. The charred surface is treated in a way that looks as natural as possible yet durable enough to withstand everyday use.

This Product Plants A Tree
As part of ÅBEN's mission to make a more positive contribution to the environment, we have partnered with One Tree Planted to plant one tree for every product sold. Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines.
We need more trees. Find out more on onetreeplanted.org
